Presently
the latest news on the entertainment industry is about a Nigerian
Disc_Jokey, DJ OBI who is currently on his way to be named by the
Guiness World Record as the DJ to have the ' Longest marathon club
play'. DJ OBI was recently interviewed by Toolz on the Beat 99.9 Fm on
how he was able to accomplish this . I was chanced to be tuned in to the
radio station at that time and i must say i was glad i did because the
dialogue was interesting and it wasn't monotonous with the interviewer
having to be the one bringing up the jokes and all.
Dj
OBi narrated his story on how we manage to pull off this massive feet
and what intrigued me was how he could pull this off in a developing
country as Nigeria and the impact it would have to the immediate
community where around him. He started by saying how he got the light in
his bulb. ' The spark started as at last year august during a meeting
with his pr team someone mentioned of a dutch Dj who was had playing
songs on a marathon of like 8days. So he decided to break this record by
playing non-stop for 10days which is the same as 240hours at Sao Café
in Lekki Phase one, Lagos.
On the First day DJ OBi said
that he imagined the only support he would get would be from his
team, his friends and his family but was amazed when the newgot online
and Top Celebrities in the Nigerian industry started showing up. He was
amazed when Don Jazzy of Mavins record came to show support and posted a
picture of it on the social media. This made the news go viral and more
celebrities like 2face, Fresh L, Banky W, Dbanj, Naeto C, Lynxx and
Lupe Fiasco from the United States of America started stopping in to
show support to the extent that M.I Abaga shifted the office of the
Chocolate City to Sao Café for Four Days.
He also added
that what kept him going was the love he was getting from his community
as it responded positively towards. He mentioned of his neighbor who
started using the music from his set to workout and other folks who came
around to use his music to carrier out various activities like zumba
class, yoga class and so on.
He mentioned that this
wasn't easy as it sounds as he had to overcome some certain challenges.
In other to break the record he had to play more than approximately more
than 200 hours without the music going off. He said he also could not
repeat a song for the next 4hours after it has being played, He also
could not leave the set because a camera from the Guinness World record
was recording him and as long as the timer is on he must be behind the
deck working his magic as he was only permitted and hour or two of rest
after every four hours of play to freshen up, change , eat and maybe
sleep.
When asked how he was encouraged he replied by saying “I
hadn’t slept for maybe 4 or 5 days, I woke up hallucinating, I wasn’t in
control of my body… People kept using my dad as a reference point,
because you know, I’d lost my dad – and you know, ‘he’s going to be
disappointed if you stop, you have to keep pushing, he’s watching you,
he’s looking.’ But that’s really what kept me going.”
He
also faced challenges of power supply but overcame by execute his back
up plan by having a two standby generators and UPS. he narrated off a
time when Tiwa savage was present to support him and the light went off
for a just a minute with the music still on over but to his surprise
the crowd present had used the light from their phones to illuminate the
place, This encouraged him and gave him more reason to continue.
Big
Ups DJ Obi, this story to me is not just about breaking the Guinness
World record but shows how Nigerians can come together to support
something positive and full of talents.
